Youth Programs
The Study Centers
There are four study centers in our family housing neighborhoods around the city. Each center is open following the public school calendar in the afternoon/early evening to provide academic support and enrichment programming for youth of all ages. The centers are drop in and every day is different.
Volunteers serving with the study centers typically visit for two hours each week to provide academic support to youth.
The Study Centers are also home to many of the special projects and programs that volunteers bring to the centers.
The CHEETA Project
The Community Hope Through Education Empowerment Training and Action (CHEETA) project is a youth driven and led project of the Portland Housing Authority. CHEETA youth work together to identify the needs in their communities and design projects, programs, and workshops to address those needs.
Volunteer opportunities are based on the needs of the students year to year.
Adult Programs
The Study Centers
In addition to being open in the afternoon for youth, our four study centers in our family housing neighborhoods around the city have morning hours in order to support adults specifically. Each center is open following the public school calendar to provide support, resources, and programming to meet the unique needs of adults in our communities. The centers are drop in and every day is different.
Volunteers serving with the study centers typically visit for two hours each week to provide academic, language, or computer skills support to adults.
The Study Centers are also home to many of the special projects and programs that volunteers bring to the centers.
Small and Large Group Volunteering
Groups of volunteers are encouraged to contact us to find a project that best meets the unique needs of your crew. Whether one-time service trips or ongoing program support, we will work with you to make your service meaningful and productive.
Some examples of group volunteer experiences:
- Painting community rooms, handicap ramps, and stairs
- Ongoing volunteering with the group members split across days of the week with the Study Centers
- Clean up day events picking up trash
- Tearing down walls or ripping up floors for renovation
- supporting large scale community events like health fairs and block parties
Special Programs and Projects
Special programs and projects are typically planned and organized by individual or group volunteers that have a specific passion or interest that they want to share or put to use through our existing programs.
We are always interested in working with volunteers to create new programs or projects that meet the needs of our community members.
Some examples of past special programming:
- Weekly arts programming
- Water sample testing
- STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) projects
- Music and dance programs
- Yoga classes
Summer Opportunities
Summer Lunch
The Summer Lunch program provides free balanced lunches to youth in our family housing neighborhoods while school is closed for the summer months. The Program runs Monday through Friday from noon to 1:00 PM.
Volunteers serving with the lunch program typically visit as often as they are available to help pass out meals and keep the lunch room tidy. Volunteers also provide enrichment programming during the lunch hour such as Yoga, reading, and science activities.

Many volunteer needs are consistent throughout the year but sometimes we have special programs that need extra volunteers.
